Die Elliotelfe (Selasphorus ellioti) gehörte ehemals zur Gattung Atthis, zusammen mit der sehr ähnlichen Rosenkehlelfe (Atthis heloisa, jetzt Selasphorus heloisa), welche endemisch ist im mexikanischen Hochland nördlich der Landenge of Tehuantepec. Die Elliotelfe ist endemisch im Hochland südlich dieser Landenge einschließlich südliches Mexiko, Guatemala, El Salvador und Honduras.

In Guatemala kommt die Elliotelfe oberhalb von 1500 m vor, hauptsächlich über 2000 m. Während der Brutzeit versammeln sich mehrere Männchen an Balzplätzen.
